It’s that time again…Update, update, update!
Can we say Olympics are the most inspiring thing Ever?! I’ve decided that after this marathon, I’m going to train to be a gymnast, syncronized diver, weight lifter, swimmer, and a track runner! Ok, ok, so maybe not, but it’s definitely giving me the extra mojo I need to keep pushing during some of the hardest training I’ll encounter during this process!
It’s pretty funny, because I have grown up being that girl in freshman PE class shuffling around the track on Run Day (1x a week), giggling with my girlfriends, and snapping my bubble gum. Meanwhile my coach, all dressed in his full teal and purple jogging suit, frustrated and yelling “C’mon Philly, RUN!!”. Now, here I am training for a marathon! It’s wild how life changes a person…
Of the most recent training, it’s been the most educational in what I should and shouldn’t do, so this update will show you what I’m “Learning”!
Lesson 1: Run until you can’t run anymore…walk a little, then run some more.
– I’ve gone through an 11 mile run and a 12 mile run. It REALLY hit me on the 12-mile run that I wasn’t in Kansas anymore. I attempted to do an interval run with 10 minute jogs, 2 minute walks, 10 minute jogs, etc…I’ve decided that it was not my cup-of-tea. #1 it made the run feel like it was never ever ever going to end, and it was more strenuous on my body to keep stopping and re-starting.
Lesson 2: Watch out for Cyclists!
- As of today, the farthest I’ve gone is 13 miles, and it was pretty nice (I know, Nice and 13 mile run don’t really belong together in the same sentence). Our course was along the North County coast, and went through Del Mar. Talk about a city full of outdoor enthusiasts! The course was full of people on road bikes, other runners and tourists. It’s great people watching, but a bit of challenge trying to weave in and out of people. I made it in 2 1/2 hours, which included fuel stops, walk breaks, and map reading (the course was a little windy).
Lesson 3: Don’t miss practice!
- So, I’ve been a VERY GOOD GIRL, and have been going to every run Except this last Saturday. It was a “Back Down” run (8 miles), and I slept in (I know, Bad Phia!). I figured I would make it up over the weekend, but I didn’t, and Yes, I beat myself up every single second of the entire weekend, and went to make it up on Monday morning before work (5:30a). Crazy, I know. Never again…
Well, that’s the conclusion of my running tales, but the next email will be the BIG Update, because this Sunday I’m running the America’s Finest City – Half Marathon in San Diego (13.1 Miles)!! I’m so excited, and a little nervous. It starts at 7:00am, but due to the course, we have to meet at Balboa Park (finish line) at 5am to take a shuttle to Point Loma ( our starting point)! Stay tuned for all of the fun photos and my official finishing time!!
