This weekend we celebrated Jen’s 29th birthday in Solana Beach. We had dinner at the Wild Note Cafe which adjoins the Belly Up Tavern, which was convenient since we also caught Dread Zeppelin (more on them in a later post) .
First of all I have to say that the Wild Note was excellent, the apps were Lobster Dumplings, seared Ahi and some good ol’ frings. The Lobster Dumpling were in this kind of raspberry sauce that was simply amazing. Martin had the presence of mind to take a onion ring and utilize the left over dumpling sauce, which I suspect was the best choices he made all evening. As for Ahi, it’s basically fish that’s been ripped from the ocean, and cooked for about 17 seconds and then placed on a plate. So depending almost solely on the quality and freshness of the fish, either it sucks or it’s wonderful. Thankfully the dish fell into the latter category. There was even a spirited game of “guess the number Martin’s thinking of” which determined who would get the last remaining piece. Lindsay won.
For Dinner I had the Grilled Filet Medallions with truffled mash, asparagus and a brandy peppercorn demiglaze. Boy did I ever made the right decision, the meat was excellent and cooked to perfection (medium – rare). It was tender and perfectly flavored. The mashed potatoes were awesome I always love asparagus with a good steak.
I can’t speak for the desserts because I happen to not really like Chocolate or Peanut Butter (Yes I know I’m crazy), but based solely on the reaction from everyone else, I’d say it was amazing. In fact there have been a small fight over my dessert which I opted out of. After dinner it was an easy segway into the club where the drinks flowed and the good time rolled. In all we had a wonderful night. Many thanks to Bill for putting together an awesome evening and thanks to everyone who attended for making it a really fun night! I hope you all felt OK the next day! HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEN!
